Physical activity not only helps kids stay healthy and strong, but can also contribute to higher test scores, improved attendance, better behavior in class, enhanced leadership skills and a lifetime of healthy habits.
The Walking Classroom, which aligns with the NAA's standards for Healthy Eating and Physical Activity, is a program that helps students get fresh air and exercise as they build core knowledge. Students take a brisk 20-minute walk while listening to custom-written, educational podcasts on topics appropriate for grades three through eight. Each entertaining podcast begins with a brief health message, so students are building their health literacy with each lesson. After a Walking Classroom lesson, educators report that students are in better moods, more focused and more likely to engage in post-walk discussions.
While all students benefit from the increased activity and educational content of The Walking Classroom, inactive children and children with low academic achievement stand to benefit the most.
