Hudman says her strategies will work equally well for small staffs in rural areas and for larger, urban programs. "I'd ask myself, 'Could my mom do this with her youth group?'" Hudman's strategies focus on building relationships, and allow for the inclusion of young people in the implementation of the strategies. She characterizes her book as an action plan: "It's a 'how-to,' not a 'theory' manual—It's not just strategy—there are actions steps you can take today."

Author Carolyn Hudman, NAA Affiliate Leader for Kentucky, is the director of Kentucky Out-of-School Alliance, an instructor in communication at Jefferson Technical and Community College, consultant, and speaker. She earned her master's degree in Communication and Leadership from Gonzaga University, as well as a Certificate in Fund-Raising Management from Indiana University.
