This exciting competition encourages students to apply critical thinking to solve a real-world problem and communicate their idea through a video submission. New this year, Discovery Education has worked with NAA to develop specific resources to help afterschool professionals implement the Young Scientist Challenge with youth in their programs.
How can students enter?
To enter the competition, students in grades five through eight are asked to create a 1- to 2-minute video that showcases a new, innovative solution that can solve an everyday problem. Students can enter here through April 21, 2015.
Where can I find afterschool specific resources?
Visit the Challenge website to find resources specifically designed for the afterschool space, in both English and Spanish!
Why should I encourage my students to participate?
In addition to providing a unique project-based learning opportunity, the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge gives students the chance to work one-on-one with a 3M Scientist during an exclusive mentorship experience.
What kind of prizes can my students win?
The grand prize winner will be named "America's Top Young Scientist" and receive $25,000! Ten finalists will each receive $1,000; a trip to 3M's World Headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota; and the chance to win a once-in-a-life adventure trip to a destination such as Costa Rica.
