Webinar: Maximizing Out-of-School Time

Empowering Afterschool Providers to Create Healthier Communities: January 29, 2015, 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. PST

Due to the number of U.S. children who attend various types of afterschool care, it is becoming increasingly clear that out-of-school time staff can play an essential role in helping young people eat healthy and stay active.

To effectively implement programs and policies that advance wellness, however, afterschool staff need high-quality tools and resources. This session will outline the value of afterschool care, and provide specific ideas to help make out-of-school time programs part of an effective strategy to help children eat better and move more.

Specifically, this interactive forum will:

  • Present childhood obesity statistics as well as recent AfterSchool Alliance data on the number of youth in afterschool programs.
  • Address the history and development of the National AfterSchool Association Standards for Healthy Eating and Physical Activity.
  • Share examples from afterschool providers across the country successfully implementing the Standards and best practices.
  • Outline available professional development resources that can be used to advance healthy eating and physical activity in out-of-school time.

Presenters include Daniel Hatcher, MPH, advisor to National Healthy Out-of-School Time; Jennifer Hofman, MS, Health Partnerships and Policy Specialist, Healthy Living and Government Relations Team; and Jean Wiecha, MS, PhD, senior scientist at RTI International. The webinar will be moderated by Amanda Wilson, MS, project manager, Strategic Engagement Coordinator of Active Living Research, a National Program of the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation at the University of California, San Diego.
