NOVEMBER
Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson

In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beyond race, class, or other factors, there is a powerful caste system that influences people's lives and behavior and the nation's fate. Linking the caste systems of America, India, and Nazi Germany, Wilkerson explores eight pillars that underlie caste systems across civilizations, including divine will, bloodlines, stigma, and more. DECEMBER
The 1619 Project by The New York Times Magazine

The 1619 Project is a historical analysis of how slavery shaped American political, social and economic institutions. U.S. history is often taught and popularly understood through the eyes of its great men, who are seen as either heroic or tragic figures in a global struggle for human freedom. The 1619 Project, named for the date of the first arrival of Africans on American soil, sought to place "the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of our national narrative." Viewed from the perspective of those historically denied the rights enumerated in America's founding documents, the story of the country's great men necessarily looks very different. You can get the essays here.
