Mentorship and its Impact on the OST Profession

Monday, 09 January 2023 13:10

January is National Mentorship Month! Mentorship allows people of all ages to learn from one another, providing a path to knowledge transfer for education, work, and more. Mentoring exposes young people to caring, involved role models, and while out-of-school-time professionals often serve in that role for the young people in their programs, the relationships built between mentors and mentees are important for both individuals and organizations.

Mentorship provides a sounding board for mentees. Mentors can listen to their mentees’ concerns and brainstorm ideas and suggestions about their future. They can share feedback that might help move a person’s path forward in their OST career trajectory.

Mentorship boosts a mentor's interpersonal skills. Interactions with a mentee offer numerous opportunities to practice and build interpersonal skills, such as communication, active listening, empathy, and patience. Beyond mentorship, having strong interpersonal skills can help employees develop relationships and collaborate more effectively.

Mentorship promotes diversity and inclusion in organizations. Mentoring in the workplace makes your employees feel supported and also gives your organization the opportunity to support minority employees within the workplace to aid their progression into senior roles.

Mentorship serves as a trusted space for mentees to grow. Trust represents a core element of mentoring relationships, and mentors provide accurate, honest guidance so that their mentees may have a safe environment to explore lessons learned through both triumphs and mistakes.

Mentorship helps enhance and establish expertise for mentors. Leadership skills are valuable for any profession or role and this experience demonstrates that you have valuable knowledge to share and can use it to guide others. Participating in mentorship opportunities can show that you value helping others develop professionally.

Mentorship improves an organization’s ability to attract and retain talent. Mentoring not only helps build a workplace culture that values support, learning, and building relationships – it is now a key factor employees look for in a new role. Get a competitive edge in retaining current and potential staff by providing them with this piece of job quality that  makes them feel more supported and invested in their position.

Developing a mentorship program within your organization comes with a wide range of benefits for everyone involved. From increased retention rates to improved self-confidence among employees, the advantages are endless.
