It’s hard to believe a year has passed since the National AfterSchool Association announced its first Director of Advocacy & Workforce Initiatives position. This is a critical role for the Association’s ramped-up efforts to elevate the job quality of out-of-school time career opportunities throughout the United States, and NAA found the perfect fit in Angelica Portillo. We first met Angelica in 2018 when she was honored with the Next Generation of Afterschool Leaders award by NAA as the Director of Advocacy at Dallas Afterschool. In a year at the national level of out-of-school time support for programs and professionals, Angelica has hurdled obstacles and pioneered initiatives head-on.

“Over the past year, I have had the privilege to present, facilitate conversations, serve on panels, and deliver keynotes for incredible organizations such as the National Summer Learning AssociationIndiana Afterschool NetworkPrime Time Palm Beach CountyU.S. Department of EducationIllinois Afterschool NetworkThe Y (YMCA), and Colorado Department of Education, and many more!” Angelica said. Her new responsibilities and accomplishments didn’t come without a bump or two, however. “As elated as I was to accept the position, imposter syndrome reared its head in the first few months,” she shared. “I was going from a city-level position to a national role and worried that I might have taken too far of a leap… But I have amazing colleagues who truly support me.”

Throughout her experiences over the last 365 days, Angelica has gleaned valuable insights to help other young professionals on their career journeys.

  • Get some flora or fauna goi My dog, Lucy, keeps me company and brightens my outlook on less-than-stellar days.
  • Find something outside of your job to spend time on. I’m training for a 10K and exploring other hobbies to try out.
  • Don’t lose sight of how important your work is; If you don’t get a little nervous, you’re taking it for granted.

“My anticipation stems from wanting to deliver the best content and audience experience,” she explained. “I always want to ensure that those listening to me find the session informative and valuable, and I am so grateful for every opportunity that comes my way.”
