20 Phrases - Advice to Help Set Better Boundaries at Work and Home

If you feel burnt out, you might be struggling with boundaries. Marissa Badgley, Founder of Reloveution shares the following 20 phrases to help proactively set time, relationship, intellectual, physical, emotional, and material boundaries. 

TIME:

1.  I can only stay for an hour.
2.  I don’t have time for that right now.
3.  I spend time with my (kids, partner, pets) in the evening.
4.  Not right now, maybe later.

RELATIONSHIP:

5.  This friendship is no longer serving me.
6.  This does not feel comfortable to me.
7.  I need some space from this relationship.
8.  It’s not you. It’s me. (J/K, this doesn’t work)

INTELLECTUAL:

9.  It’s okay that we disagree, and it’s not ok when you belittle me.
10.  We can discuss this more but now is not the time.
11.  This doesn’t fall into my bucket of responsibilities.

PHYSICAL:

12.  I’m drained and need to (sit down, sleep).
13.  I need to eat before we can have this conversation.
14.  I need to (take a break, a short walk, get some fresh air) before we continue.

EMOTIONAL:

15.  I’m not in the right emotional state to talk about that right now.
16.  I can only continue this conversation if you stop criticizing my feelings.
17.  This does not feel good to me and I need to stop. 

MATERIAL:

18.  I can’t give you more money, but I can support you in another way.
19.  I can loan you this laptop, and it needs to be returned by…
20.  Please don’t take __________ from my room without asking.
