NAA22 Convention is the perfect place to come together in unity, with community, and for opportunity. It is also the perfect place to find engaging SEL content, tools, and resources to use in your programs. Take a  sneak peek at some of the sessions planned this year.

SEL Through Sports: Positive Youth Development Experiences in your Community
The Jr. NBA, Positive Coaching Alliance, Laureus USA, and the Center for Healing and Justice Through Sport will host a highly interactive session  on how to use sports and play in your out-of-school time to teach social and emotional skills. WNBA Legend and Las Vegas Aces Chief Business Development Officer Jennifer Azzi will join leaders in the sports-based youth development (SBYD) space to share tangible tips on developing a culture that focuses on positive youth development, the importance of training coaches and mentors in trauma-informed tactics, and how to measure outcomes related to social and emotional learning. Attendees of this session will take away an understanding of how they can use a SBYD lens to their out-of-school time experience, as well as potential funding opportunities to bring programs to their local communities.
Speaker: Jennifer Azzi

Sports Based Youth Development: Hitting a Home Run in SEL
During this interactive salon, participants will learn about the results of two studies that have examined effective practices for promoting social emotional learning (SEL) in sports programs and discuss the role that gender, race, and ethnic identity play in promoting these outcomes. Both program practitioners and measurement experts will share how positive youth development approaches support positive outcomes. Together the group will “make meaning” of these findings and brainstorm effective and equitable practices that can be used on and off the field.
Speakers: Kim Sabo Flores, Julia Lankford, Akilah Carter-Francique

Exploring the Integrated SEL Concepts Through Cardio Drumming
Interactive drumming and rhythm activities activate behaviors that are crucial to social, emotional development. To hear the beat of a rhythm requires active listening, and keeping the rhythm steady and stable, demands a commitment to the group. The basic lessons of listening and creating a beat together are the foundations for social, emotional learning. When students are able to activate their internal focus on control and engage fully; they practice pro-social behavior in a way that is natural, playful, and fun for everyone. Drumming is a beautiful way to connect people and transcend differences. While it encourages self-expression in the participant, it also promotes cohesiveness as a group, as there is teamwork involved in the performance. Join us in examining the five primary SEL skills, as defined by CASEL, found in cardio drumming. We will take a hands-on approach to exploring curriculum, games, and collaborative team activities that reinforce these concepts.

SEL; It's Not Just for Kids
Studies show that adults who recognize, understand, label, and regulate their own emotions are less likely to report burnout, demonstrate higher levels of patience and empathy, encourage healthy communication, and create safe learning environments for students. What does this mean for the OST field? What does this mean for leaders of people? We'll share some research and discuss in Salon Style what we can do to strengthen adult SEL skills in programs, organizations, and across the OST landscape.
Speakers: Lisa Rice, Tamara Payne-Alex
