2016 Leading with EQ Fellowship: Culminating Impact Project Proposals

Tuesday, 24 May 2016 00:00

The National AfterSchool Association's Leading with Emotional Intelligence Fellowship is designed to develop the emotional intelligence (EQ) of afterschool leaders. In the Fellowship's inaugural year, 17 afterschool leaders were selected. Each fellowship participant received funding to complete a culminating impact project. Here, we offer a look at some of those projects.

Heidi Brown | 21CCLC District Director, Des Moines Public Schools
Nichelle Harris | SACC Director, Marysville Exempted Village SD
Stacy Litteral | Executive Director, Kids Country
Tracey Horton | Faculty Instructor, Charter Oak State College

DARE TO BE CRITIQUED
Heidi Brown, Nichelle Harris, Tracey Horton and Stacy Litteral have chosen to complete their Culminating Impact project as a group. Collectively, they recognized that some professionals fail to have others in their field assess their leadership capabilities. These afterschool professionals will use the relationship management tool Enhance Your Relationship Management Skills to guide their project. The tool includes seven relationship management competency areas: influence, inspirational teamwork, developing others, change catalyst, conflict management, building bonds and teamwork.

This project will consist of three phases. Phase 1 will involve developing and delivering a two-hour classroom-style training program, Dare to be Critiqued: Enhancing Your Relationship Management Skills. During this training program, participants will learn about the seven relationship management competencies, study a 360-degree critique tool and develop a plan to grow their relationship management skillset. During Phase 2, a pocket calendar will be created. This calendar will include relationship management tips and tricks, reminders and inspirational quotes. Phase 3 will involve the use of a relationship management app. The app will have a push notifications in the form of daily inspirational quotes, polls and articles. Users will be reminded to track their relationship management growth and development.

This group of afterschool professionals plans to demonstrate improvement in their participants' relationship management skills through pre- and post-testing at all three phases.

The 2016 Leading with Emotional Intelligence Fellowship has allowed fellowship recipients to develop their social and emotional learning skillset. They are then able to share this knowledge with their colleagues and the children with whom they work.
